Cottage Grove hours are the service center hours on the Cottage Grove facility page. The Forest Lake facility page says hours vary by department, so that office has no hours line. Environmental center hours are the hours printed next to those centers on the county page. Environmental centers: 651-275-7475. Public Health and Environment appointments: 651-430-6655. County main number on the facility pages: 651-430-6000. Cottage Grove and the Forest Lake service center are listed with their street addresses. They are not on the map because we could not confirm a building coordinate.

Minnesota Department of Health radon program

MDH says every Minnesota home should be tested. In Minnesota, more than two in five homes have radon levels that pose a significant health risk.

MDH's overview page does not sell a state kit or list a state kit price.

Use MDH for testing rules, the radon data portal, and licensed measurement or mitigation professionals. Indoor Air Unit: 651-201-4601, health.indoorair@state.mn.us.

MDH says the EPA action level is 4 pCi/L. MDH recommends a mitigation system at 4 pCi/L or higher, and says a system can be considered between 2 and 4 pCi/L. Testing steps are on the MDH radon testing page.

EPA radon zone

EPA classifies Washington County as Zone 1, its highest radon-potential category. Individual homes can vary, so testing is still the only way to know your home's level. The zone is not a claim that your house is high.

How to test, and what a result means

Place the kit the way its instructions say, and keep the house closed when the kit requires that. A short test is a screen. It is not the last word if your state wants a follow-up test.

How we check programs

Test your home. Then help someone else test theirs.

A reusable monitor does not have to stay in one house. After you have a reading you trust for your own home, you can lend it to a parent, an adult child, a coworker, a neighbor, or a friend.

Here is an example, not a sale price. If a roughly $100 monitor is eventually used by five households, the equipment cost works out to about $20 per household. Your real price will be whatever the maker charges that day.

Lending a monitor this way does not meet a professional test or a real estate requirement. When you move the device, follow the manufacturer's instructions and start a new measurement.
