Radon test kits

A radon test kit is a small device you leave in the house, then read or mail to a lab. Health departments sometimes sell them for a few dollars, or give them away while supplies last. Stores sell them too.

Types you will see

  • Short-term kits. Often a few days. A useful first screen. Charcoal kits are common.
  • Long-term kits. Often three months or more. A better picture of the year.
  • Continuous monitors. Electronic devices you can reuse. Those are covered on the monitor page, after you have seen the local kit options.

What a local program might include

Will County's $8 kit, for example, includes directions, prepaid postage, lab analysis, and a written report. Another agency may charge a separate lab fee, or may not say. We only print the inclusion list when the official page says it.

Some offers are limited to homeowners, to one kit per household per year, or to residents of one city. The program card states the rule we found. If the page did not state a rule, we do not invent one.
